VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID)

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) The King of Vitamins and very often misunderstood for it's amazing longevity and disease preventing properties.

Ascorbic Acid is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for the body;s growth and development. It is synthesised by plants and majority of animals from glucose and galactose. However there are a small amount of primates, members of the animal kingdom along with Humans that lack the enzyme required for biosynthesis of Ascorbic Acid. Thus Ascorbic Acid is an essential nutrient (vitamin) that must be obtained from dietary or supplemental origins

  1. Iron Regulation - Ascorbic Acid is involved with the regulation of iron through a number of different mechanisms. It enhances iron absorption within the gastrointestinal tract by regulating iron transfer and storage pathways.
  2. L-Carnitine Synthesis and Fatty Acid Transport - Ascorbic Acid is required for synthesis of L-Carnitine, an important compound necessary for the transportation of fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane into the mitochondria where they are utilised as an energy source. L-Carnitine is an important compound for the production of cellular energy, particularly in heart and skeletal muscle.
